Skill Select Visa Australia

Skill Select Visa Australia

Skill Select Australia is the primary pathway to obtain Permanent Residency in the country. By participating in Skill Select, you express your interest in being considered for a skilled visa. To be considered for the visa(s) of your choice, you will need to provide various information, including:

  • Personal details
  • Nominated Occupation
  • Work Experience
  • Educational Background and Qualifications
  • Proficiency in the English language
  • Details of a Skills Assessment relevant to your nominated occupation
  • Business and investment experience.

For a comprehensive understanding of the specific questions and information required for your chosen visa(s), kindly refer to the respective web-page dedicated to those visas.

Point Based Test

The Points Based Test is the evaluation system used for skilled migration visa programs. Applicants are ranked based on their points score according to the relevant points test. It’s possible to submit a Skill Select even if you don’t meet the pass mark requirement, but it won’t result in a visa invitation. The pass mark for skilled migration is 65 points. However, meeting the pass mark does not guarantee a visa invitation.

  • If you choose subclass 190 or 491 visas, you will receive additional points for nomination or sponsorship. For example, selecting the 190 visa subclass grants you 5 extra points to your overall score. Your points score, based on the claims made in your Skill Select, will be displayed before submission.

Nominated Occupation

When applying for a visa that requires a nominated occupation, it’s essential to verify if your occupation is in demand in Australia by referring to the Skilled Occupation List. You must provide details of a Skills Assessment related to your nominated occupation in your Skill Select.

Skill Select

Skill Select is an online service that allows skilled workers interested in migrating to Australia to express their interest in a skilled visa through an Expression of Interest (EOI). Australian employers, state and territory governments, or the Australian Government can find and nominate suitable candidates for skilled visas based on their EOIs.

  • This system represents a significant change from the previous approach, where meeting enough points under a particular visa category automatically qualified an applicant for it. The new system benefits prospective visa applicants by simplifying the Skill Select submission process, eliminating early documentation requirements and initial payments. EOIs remain in the database for up to two years, increasing the likelihood of receiving a visa invitation.

  • If selected and invited, applicants only need to make a one-time investment, reducing costs and making the visa approval process more feasible. All visa applicants must meet English language requirements and obtain the necessary skills assessment before submitting their Skill Select.

Skilled migration points test requirements

Under Skill Select, the points-tested skilled migration visa subclasses (189, 190, and 491) maintain the following requirements:

  1. Intending migrants must pass a points test to receive an invitation to apply for a visa.
  2. The factors assessed in the points test will be similar to the current one, but the points will be based on the applicant’s attributes at the time of invitation, not application lodgment or decision.
  3. The pass mark represents the minimum number of points required to be eligible for a points-tested skilled migration visa, subject to changes based on Australian labor market needs.

Starting from 1 July 2012, certain visa types necessitate the submission of Skill Select and receiving an invitation before applying for the visa. These include:

  • Subclass 189 Skilled Independent (Permanent)
  • Subclass 190 Skilled Sponsored (Permanent)
  • Subclass 491 Regional Sponsored (Provisional)
  • Subclass 132 Business Talent (Permanent)
  • Subclass 188 Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional)

Moreover, individuals can express interest in the following visa programs through Skill Select to be selected by an employer:

  • Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS)
  • Subclass 187 Regional Sponsored Scheme (RSMS)
  • Subclass 457 Temporary Business (Long Stay)

The benefits of using Skill Select include a hassle-free documentation process, with the expression of interest remaining in the database for two years, and a one-time investment for visa approval.
